Nordhavn 68' Motor Sailor?

Alexander, one of the regular readers of my blog sent me Nordhavn's preliminary plans for a new 68' motor sailor.

Alexander:

Thank you for sending the plans!

Recently I attended the Nordhavn rendezvous and was able to see the 56' motor sailor. It was a beautiful boat with much to like.

That said, I was looking more because I have several friends who are sailors, and I would like to see them consider a Nordhavn. Personally, I like the idea of a motor sailor, but am definitely a power boater.

Pros I see to a motor sailor:

- Extreme range
- A "get home" capability that works with no fuel or electricity
- The wind makes a nice stabilizer and doesn't create drag or eat fuel
- Less equipment to fix
- More space for the interior of the boat, with less devoted to equipment space and fuel

Cons:

- Generally speaking, power boats do not worry about weight. If I want to add something to my boat, I add it. Whereas on sail boats, weight is a huge issue. I did some looking around for conversion ratios of sail area to horsepower. I'm still looking for the exact math (I know it exists because I've found it before), but I did find this quote: "...About 85 square feet (7.9 m2) of working sail for every 2,000 pounds (907 kg) of displacement is sufficient to produce a boat that is an efficient passagemaker in medium winds..." The 68' motor sailor has 1,400 sq ft of sail, which implies that that the maximum weight of the boat shouldn't be more than about 16 tons, to be propelled by sail alone. Perhaps I have the math wrong. I'm not a naval engineer, although I am a software engineer (which is totally irrelevant). So, my sense is that the sail helps, but that really this boat either must be really light, or is intended to be primarily sailed in conjunction with the main engines. To give you a point of comparison, my boat weighs 120 tons.
- Most people I know who sail wind up motoring most of the time. It's a pain to put the sails up, particularly for short runs.

And, for me, the most compelling argument of all: I haven't the vaguest idea how to sail!

Where I can attach this PDF files for N68 MS?

To answer you question.

No, I am not a motor boater or sailor, but, I had some glorious experience on motor yacht, not around the word, just up and down Cal. Cost from Mexico to Alaska and back, and the boat wasn’t  Nordhavn, it was a Saline instead, nothing fancy.

I did sail with my friend on his 72 ft. yacht, and it was awesome, nothing better to be under the sail doing 8.5 knots, all you can hear is the wind over the sails and it’s nothing like it.

So, my thought was to investigate this idea. I am interested, but not shore yet if this is what I want, one thing I don’t like about sail boats is one side ride. It’s not like your power boat, some times you have to be on the angle for long period of time, no flat surfaces, I am shore you know that.

That is the only obstacle I have, so far.

On the other hands, if I  have big seas on the way, or significant swells, I can use power instead the sail, and when you have beautiful come seas and sunny days, this is the time for this boat to shine under sail.

If you look at these plans, N68 MS is surprisingly roomy.

As I understand, Nordhavn will build hull #1, if someone interested to that.

Everything is ready to go a head on the build. They just need the buyer.

Because it’s a first boat in production, I’ve been told it’ll take a little longer.

Yes. Please email me the plans if you happen to have them as a PDF.

Is this a boat Nordhavn is definitely planning to build, or considering? I'm curious to see it.

Are you a sailor? What appeals to you about a motor sailor?

I do have Profile and Interior Drawings for N68MS

If you are interested to see it, let me know.

I will consider going to Taiwan, maybe on my way back to Russia. I am Russian by the way.

I think, by reading my mail, you can easily realize that English is my second language, and it is.

PS. With this N68 MotorSailor there will be another list of questions about operating expenses for this yacht, which will be I am shore way different then motor yacht.

That's a very interesting rumor! A 68' motorsailer would be an awesome boat.

Let me know if you hear more.

There is a new N68 just finishing in Taiwan. If serious about getting an N68 a visit to Taiwan could be worthwhile. I went there several times during the construction of my boat.
